Utah’s Bureau of Licensing and Certification has just implemented a new rule that removes the CNA requirement for assisted living direct care personnel. This requirement has been removed in exchange for a more detailed orientation training requirement. At least one certified nurse aide must be on duty in a Type II facility 24 hours per day.

Objective:  Utah Administrative Code, Rule R432-270-8

Each direct-care employee shall receive 16 hours of documented one-on-one training with a direct-care employee, with at least 3 months of experience and who has completed orientation, or the supervising nurse at the facility. This training is not transferable to another facility and must include:

• Ethics, Confidentiality, and Residents’ Rights
• Fire and Disaster Plan
• Policy and Procedures
• Reporting Responsibility for Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation
• Dementia Specific Training Including:
  • Communication with Dementia Patients and their Caregivers
  • Types and Stages of Dementia Including Information on the Physical and Cognitive Declines as the Disease Progresses
• Person Centered Care Principles
• How to Maintain Safety in the Dementia Patient Environment
